Viewing the Property
How can I schedule an appointment to view the property with a Property Manager?
We strive to answer all of your questions through our website, including having you see what the units and property look like using photos throughout this website. To create your personal virtual tour of Newport Place, please view our Floor Plans & Photos web page.
If you are in San Diego and you think it is necessary to schedule an appointment to view the property, then we will gladly give you a personal tour of the property. An appointment may be scheduled with the Property Manager either by telephone or email.Note:
We require notice of at least one day to schedule a viewing of any apartment common area or studio that is currently occupied. Out of respect for the residents' privacy, we never show occupied bedrooms.

Do I need to be interviewed in person to be considered for a space at Newport Place?
No. Newport Place only requires that you submit a Reservation Request Form. You will be evaluated according to the information that you provide in your application.
Financially, you will be required to pay a 2-in-1 Holding & Security/Damage Deposit, your first month of rent and any applicable fees. No credit check is required.
Note: For couples and traveling companions: Each prospective resident must submit a separate Reservation Request Form.

We are eight blocks from the nightlife of the popular Gaslamp District. Just walk five minutes down Broadway or take a taxi for $3 - $5 each way or take the trolley for $1.50 round trip.
How close is Newport Place to the San Diego Bay?
We are fourteen blocks from the most popular San Diego Bay attractions. It is an easy ride on one of our bicycles. The streets are mostly flat; there are relaxing waterfront bike paths along the bay.
How close is Newport Place to the nearest beach(es)?
The nearest beach is located on Coronado Island. You can get there in 10 minutes by car or 20 minutes by ferry & bicycle. The nearest "party surfing beach" is Mission Beach. You can get there in 15 minutes by car or 45 minutes by trolley & bus.
How close is Newport Place to the downtown business and financial district?
Newport Place is located on the boundary of the downtown business and financial district. We are within easy walking and biking distance to all areas of this district. The trolley makes it even faster to get there.

Directions to Newport Place from the San Diego International airport?
If you are taking a taxi, follow these 3 Steps:
Step 1
Hiring a taxi is the least expensive way to get from the airport to Newport Place. Be sure to print the map route located on our Directions page before you leave home.
Step 2
At the airport, give your driver the map route. Ask the driver to take you to 1343 C (pronounced "see") Street. Newport Place is on the corner of C Street and 14th Street, across from the San Diego City College Learning Resource Center and Library.
Step 3
Have the driver follow this exact route.
If you are renting a car, the most scenic route to Newport Place from the airport is as follows:
Step 1
Leaving San Diego International Airport turn LEFT on to South Harbor Drive.
Drive SOUTH on Harbor Drive for approximately 2 miles.
[Note: As you drive South on Harbor Drive, the skyline of downtown San Diego will be directly in front of you, with the harbor on your right.]
Step 2
As you pass the "Star of India" sailing ship and approach the Cruise Ship Terminal, prepare to turn LEFT on to Broadway. Drive approximately 1 mile on Broadway through the heart of downtown San Diego.
Step 3
Turn LEFT on to 11th Avenue and drive 1 block. Next turn RIGHT on to C Street at the "Jack and the Box" restaurant. (Use caution: C Street is One Way and is also used by the trolley.) Drive 2 1/2 blocks to Newport Place (1343 C Street).
Newport Place is located on the corner of C Street and 14th Street, across the street from the San Diego City College Learning Resource Center and Library.
To move-in, where do I park the car to unload my luggage?During business hours:
To move-in during business hours, you may unload your luggage using the Newport Place driveway in the back of the building. A Newport Place staff member must be present to unlock the gate for you to temporarily park there.
After business hours:
To move-in after business hours, unload your luggage using the metered public parking spaces in front of Newport Place on C Street (These meters are free before 8 am and after 6 pm). Or you can use the free street parking on 14th Street.

Public Transportation
What public transportation facilities are near Newport Place?
Residents of Newport Place can experience the best public transportation that San Diego has to offer. Two blocks from your front door is a major hub for the San Diego transit system. Two trolley lines and over a dozen city bus lines converge on 12th and C Streets.
For Example: Do you want to see an American Football game? There is a trolley that stops outside Qualcomm Stadium. Do you want to go to Mexico for the day? You can take a trolley fifteen miles South to the Tijuana border. The Trolley is also a great way to get to Old Town San Diego or to pass through downtown to get to the bay.
Newport Place has excellent transit access:

- Interstate 5, Highway 163 & Highway 94 - three, four & five blocks
- Greyhound bus station - fifteen blocks
- Amtrak train & trolley stations - one mile

Attention SDSU students: There is express-direct trolley service to San Diego State University using the "Mission Valley to San Diego State" trolley extension. Inquire about discounted student monthly passes.
How much does it cost to take the San Diego Trolley?
The cost to ride the trolley depends on where in the city you want to go. For example: To go anywhere in the downtown area costs $2.50 round trip. You can go to Mexico for about $6 round trip. Monthly passes may be purchased for $60 and include unlimited bus and trolley travel.
How much does it cost to take the city bus?
A bus ticket costs $1.75 - $2.25. This includes one transfer to another bus line if needed. Monthly passes may be purchased for $60 and include unlimited bus and trolley travel. The bus is very economical, but it will take much longer to reach your destination by bus than by car.
Where can I buy weekly or monthly San Diego trolley & City bus passes?
Go to the "Transit Store" located at 102 Broadway on the corner of Broadway & First Avenue (13 blocks from Newport Place). The telephone number is +1.619.234.1060. Other locations that sell transit passes are: the Check Cashin Place (5th& Broadway), Ralph's Supermarket (1st & G) and Longs Drugs (Horton Plaza). You may also purchase passes from the "eStore" on the San Diego Transit website: www.sdcommute.com.

Personal Security
Do the units and property have secure keyed locks?
Yes. The front doors to all apartments and studios have security deadbolt locks. All common areas and the backyard have resident-only keyed gate access. Upon moving in, you will be issued a complete set of keys.
Do the bedroom doors have secure keyed locks?
Yes. Your bedroom door can only be locked and unlocked by you. (And rarely by our staff with 24-hour notice or in case of an emergency.)
I might be walking a lot in the area, how safe is the neighborhood?
Newport Place is located in an urban setting. You should always keep personal safety in mind when walking through any city, especially if you are alone.
However, San Diego is a very friendly place with little street crime. The streets are well lighted. The central headquarters for the San Diego Police Department is only one block from Newport Place. Therefore, patrol cars and police officers on bicycles pass frequently. In addition, campus police patrol San Diego City College across the street from Newport Place; and Transit Authority officers patrol the Trolley station two blocks away.
In general, it is very safe to walk around the area day and night. The routes with the most foot traffice are the main streets of C Street and Broadway.

Advantages of Living at Newport Place
What are the immediate financial advantages of living at Newport Place?
Newport Place is essentially for month-to-month study/work abroad travelers. We know that affordable budget travel for scholars and interns starts with accommodations. That is why part of our service to you from the beginning is to make it easy to afford to move into Newport Place. Therefore we offer:
- A low 2-in-1 Holding & Security/Damage deposit of $250
- No last month of rent paid up front
- No rent payment until you arrive at Newport Place
- No application fee
- Unlike our furnished housing competitors, Newport Place does not charge rent by the week. We charge Flat Monthly Rental Rates for a full month's stay. This means you pay rent from the first day of the month to the first day of the following month - regardless if there are 28 or 31 days.
For example: There are 4.3 weeks (31 days) in the month of May. Our competitors will have you pay 4 weeks (28 days) plus 3 days/nights of rent. Instead Newport Place will have you pay a Flat Monthly Rental Rate for a full month of rent.
Are there flexible commitment advantages of moving into Newport Place?
- You must commit to live at Newport Place for a minimum of one month. Your continued stay will be on a month-to-month basis.
- Newport Place has a very flexible move-in and move-out policy. We do not require you to move-in on the first day of the month or move-out on the first day of the following month. We allow you to move-in and move-out on any day of the month. Nearly all other apartments in San Diego will require you to move-in and move-out strictly on the first day of the month.
Note: You can move-out on any day of the month for any reason, as long as you provide the manager with 30-days notice.
- Newport Place is a month-to-month residence. This allows for both short-term and long-term residents. If you are moving to San Diego, Newport Place offers you a place to stay while you get settled in San Diego - while you get oriented and find a permanent residence. You can stay as long as you would like. We only require that a 30-day notice of your move-out date be given to the Manager.
Budget planning advantages of living at Newport Place?
The cost of living in San Diego is one of the most expensive in the United States. All of the following conveniences at Newport Place make it easier for you to stay within your budget while living in San Diego.
- The convenience of Newport Place paying all of your bills! There is no need for you to pay multiple bills.
- No tracking due dates of when to pay your utility bills.
- No worrying about whether your roommates are going to be late paying the rent or utility bills every month. You are not at risk if your roommates cannot pay their rent.
- Because you pay an all-inclusive rental rate you are not subject to monthly increases or variances in your utility bills and phone charges. The only months that you will pay a set Energy Surcharge Fee in addition to your rent are the months of November-April (during which time you will be supplied with a space heater.)
Is there a sense of community at Newport Place?
Yes. All Newport Place residents are internationally like-minded and of the same general age group.

Monthly Rental Rates & Charges
What are Newport Place's monthly rental rates?

Does my monthly rent cover all charges for staying at Newport Place?

There is a one-time Move-In Fee of $125 that each resident pays when they move into Newport Place. This is to cover the costs of creating your resident account and for the cleaning of your bedroom when you move-out.
What is included with the rental of a studio space or private bedroom?

Can a couple or two friends share (live in) one private bedroom?
As a general policy, Newport Place does not allow couples or two friends traveling together to live in one private bedroom in any shared apartment. A couple or traveling companions may share a studio. Occasionally (on a case-by-case basis) we do make short and even long-term exceptions. Please refer to the FAQs below.
When does Newport Place make a short- term exception allowing two people to share a private bedroom?
For up to four weeks, couples or two companions traveling together can share any size private bedroom in any apartment that is available while waiting for a studio to become vacant. All Visitor Fees apply to the couple/companions. On average, these fees range from $100 to $200 per month more than the one-person occupancy rental rate. If relevant, these fees will be prorated according to the move-in date to the bedroom and transfer date to the studio.
A couple or two friends traveling together that are sharing a private bedroom will be asked to relocate to a studio or elsewhere as soon as possible, if there are any objections about two people living in one bedroom from your other roommates.
Note: Each person must submit a separate Reservation Request Form, pay a separate $250 Security/Damage Deposit and sign a separate rental agreement.
When does Newport Place make a long-term exception allowing two people to share a private bedroom?
Typically we make a long-term exception for a couple, and usually not for two friends traveling together. We only make this exception for occupancy of the large bedrooms with double/full beds in on of the 2-bedroom apartments. All Visitor Fees apply. On average, these fees range from $100 to $200 per month more than the one-person occupancy rental rate. If relevant, these fees will be prorated according to your actual move-in date.
A couple that is sharing a private bedroom will be asked to relocate to a studio or elsewhere as soon as possible, if there are any objections about two people living in one bedroom from your other roommates.

Utilities
Do I pay anything for the utilities(electricity, gas, water, cable TV, telephone, Internet)?
No. Your rent includes all these utilities.
Note: During the cooler months, there is the optional use of a space heater. An additional monthly Energy Surcharge may be added to your rent bill as follows: Winter (December through March) = $35 ; Fall/Spring (November & April) = $25
Besides utilities, what else is directly included in my rent?
Your rent also includes weekly housekeeping of common areas and computer printing on a networked printer. Newport Place also replaces your light bulbs when they burn out.

Guests
Can I have friends and family stay in my room with me?
Our residents expect to share their living space with a set number of people. Therefore, Newport Place limits the number of guests a resident may have staying with them in their bedroom or studio to one guest at a time. Each guest may stay up to a maximum of 1 week with not more than 2 guests allowed within a 2-month period.
A $25.00 Guest Fee per guest (per visit) will be charged to you to pay for additional utility costs. Should you require an air-bed, one can be set up with bed and bath linens by Newport Place staff for a fee of $25.00.

How many stories tall is Newport Place?
Newport Place is comprised of two separate buildings. Each building has two stories. All units are accessed from the outside of the building by the ground floor or by going up one flight of stairs to the second floor.
Do the apartments and studios have private entrances?
Each apartment and studio at Newport Place has its own entrance. To learn more about the entrances, please refer to the physical descriptions of all our units located on the Floor Plans & Photos web page.
Only one bedroom at Newport Place has its own private entrance: bedroom B in apartment 9.
What size are the bedrooms?
Newport Place offers large, medium and small bedrooms. When you submit your Reservation Request Form, indicate which size bedroom you can afford. We will try our best to meet your needs upon your arrival. If the specific room you request is not available, we will place your name on the waiting list for that room.

How large are the apartments and studios?
Every apartment and studio in Newport Place is a different size with a different layout. Each Unit is unique unto itself. Please refer to our Floor Plans & Photos web page.
How much closet space will I have?
Bedrooms have either built-in closets,wardrobe closets or contemporary metal wardrobe systems that can be moved and adjusted to fit your needs. Studios have wardrobe closets.
In general, the residents at Newport Place are staying in San Diego on a temporary basis. Therefore, we offer clothes storage with suitcase/backpack traveling in mind. However if you need more storage space, there is bulk-storage space available for rent in the locked basement of the building.

Kitchen
Do the kitchens have everything needed to cook?
Yes. All Newport Place apartments and studios have full kitchens. Each kitchen is equipped with a stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, coffee machine, toaster, blender, rice cooker, garbage disposal, pots and pans, cooking utensils, cutlery, dishes and glassware.
Are the kitchens in the apartments and studios shared?
There is one kitchen in each apartment and studio. You share the kitchen only with the (one, two or three) roommate(s) that live in your apartment or studio.
Can I have a private kitchen?
You must rent an entire apartment (rarely possible) or rent an entire studio for yourself.

Are the bathrooms shared?
There is one bathroom in each apartment and studio. You share the bathroom only with the (one, two or three) roommate(s) that live in your apartment or studio.
Can I have a private bathroom?
You must rent an entire apartment (rarely possible) or rent an entire studio for yourself.

Furnishings
Are Newport Place's apartments and studios furnished or unfurnished?
Newport Place provides fully furnished, contemporary styled apartments and studios. Each apartment/studio includes: utilities, local telephone service, cable TV, stereo, desktop computer, unlimited wireless Internet access, bed linens & towels, and a full kitchen with appliances & utensils.
Does Newport Place offer any unfurnished apartments or studios?
No. We do not offer any unfurnished Units.
Can you tell me more about the furnishings?

What sort of furniture do you have to buy, if you want to share an apartment or studio?
You do not need to buy any furniture. All the furniture you need "from A to Z" is provided for you.
Can I move my own furniture into a private bedroom or studio?
In general, you cannot move furniture into a bedroom or studio. The exceptions to this policy are: small plants, desktop computers, stereos and other small personal electronics. If you need storage space for personal furnishings, there is bulk-storage space available for rent in the locked basement of the building.
Does Newport Place provide bed linens and towels?
Yes. One set of linens and towels will be provided to you. The full set includes: mattress pad, full set of sheets, 1 pillow with pillow liner and coverf, 2 blankets, 1 bath towel, 1 hand towel, 1 wash cloth. It is your responsibility to have your linens and towels laundered.

Telephone
Is there any additional cost for telephone service?
No. Telephone service is included in your rent. Your apartment/studio's telephone service includes: a private phone line for your apartment/studio only, all incoming calls and FREE outgoing local calls.
Newport Place uses cable telephone service. This service is superior to standard local telephone service. It has an expanded free local toll call range three-times wider than the local telephone company.
How do I make domestic or international long distance telephone calls?
You may use a phone card to make domestic and international long distance calls from your apartment/studio's telephone. Phone cards can be purchased nearby for $5-$10.
Can I use the telephone in my bedroom?
Yes. Every Unit includes one extended range 900 mega hertz cordless telephone. The phone can be taken into your bedroom for privacy. Your phone's extended range will also allow you to roam a short distance outside your apartment/studio.
When I want to receive calls, can I answer the telephone myself?
Yes. The telephone in your apartment/studio is a private line for your unit only. When the phone rings, you or your roommates are the only ones who can answer it. In case you miss a call, there is an answering machine connected to the phone.
Is there an answering machine where my family can leave messages for me?
Your family and friends can leave messages for you on the answering machine connected to the telephon. They may leave their message for you in the language of their choice.
Where is the telephone located in my apartment or studio?
Most cordless telephone base stations with answering machines are located next to the desktop computer in your apartment's living area. Some telephones are located on their own small stands in the living room area of the apartment/studio.
Do I have a private handset in my bedroom?
No. You do not have a private handset in your bedroom. There is one shared telephone handset for each apartment/studio.
What if I want to request a personal/private telephone number?
This is not possible. We do not provide personal/private telephone numbers. Also, you are not allowed to install your own telephone service. If you must have a personal/private telephone, many residents choose to have their own mobile phones.

Computers
Can you tell me more about Newport Place's desktop computers, printers, and wireless Internet?
Each apartment and studio is furnished with a 1.7 MG or faster desktop PC which has a floppy drive, CD-ROM and at least 10 GB of hard disk space. The computers run on a Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system. Each computer is networked to one ink jet printer that is located in the laundry room. All of our computers are equipped with wireless network cards (Wi-Fi) providing high speed Internet access through the Newport Place cable modem hub.
Are the desktop computers seen in your web site photos the actual computers that are in the units?
Yes. Each apartment/studio has a PC workstation like those shown in the photos.
Where is the ink jet printer located?
The printer is located in the laundry room . All of the units' computers are networked to the printer.
Can I use the ink jet printer with my laptop or personal desktop?
We ask that you do not connect your computer to the ink jet printer. To print files from your computer, you can "move" files from your computer to your apartment/studio's computer using a floppy disk, email, or CDRW.
If I have my own laptop or desktop (all other mobile computing devices included), can I connect to Newport Place's wireless Internet system?
Yes. Using most 802.11b Wi-Fi manufacturer brands you can access our the wireless network. Newport Place's Wi-Fi system is made by LinkSys.
If you have a laptop you must have a compatible Wi-Fi 802.11b PCMCIA card. For desktops you must have a compatible internal card or external 802.11b USB Wi-Fi access point.
Can I rent or buy a Wi-Fi laptop card or desktop access point from Newport Place?
No. If you need a laptop card or desktop access point, you can buy a card or access point for about $50 to $75 from most computer or office stores in San Diego.
What do I do to access the Newport Place Wi-Fi system?
When you move-in, you will be provided with the instructions and access codes for the wireless network.

Air Conditioning and Heating
Does Newport Place have air conditioning?
No. Newport Place does not have air conditioning. Instead, every room in the buildings has a ceiling fan. This is standard practice for rental properties and private homes throughout coastal San Diego. Newport Place is inside the Pacific Coastal zone where cool ocean breezes and a marine layer typically keep temperatures very compfortable at 60-75 degrees Farenheit. This also helps us to conserve energy and keep our rental rates affordable. h
Does Newport Place have heating?
Yes. During the coolest months of the year (November through April), one space heater will be distributed to each bedroom. Also during these months Newport Place will be add a Winter Energy Surcharge to your rent.

Housekeeping and Laundry
Is there maid service?
Yes. Newort Place provides weekly cleaning to all common areas (kitchen, living rooms and bathrooms). The cleaning of your bedroom is your responsibility. If you are in a studio, the sleeping area is your responsibility to keep clean.
The maid usually cleans your apartment/studio on the same day each week - the day of the week depends on which unit you live in.
Is washing my linens (sheets, blankets, pillow and towels) included with the weekly housekeeping?
No. The washing of all of the linens provided to you by Newport Place is not included with the weekly housekeeping. You are responsible for washing your own linens.
Where can I do my laundry?
Newport Place has one laundry room located in the back of the building. The entrance is on the ground level, off the brick patio area. There are 2 washing machines and 2 dryers. The machines are coin-operated and require multiple quarters ($0.25). Newport Place does not supply laundry detergent.
Can I to request have my bedroom and linens cleaned by the maid?
No. The maid working for Newport Place is very busy and has a specific cleaning schedule to follow. You may hire your own cleaning professional to clean your bedroom.
Are there cleaning supplies that I can use?
Each apartment and studio is supplied with an electric floor vacuum (that works great on wood floors), as well as a broom and dust pan. Other cleaning supplies (dish soap, multi-purpose cleaners, sponges and paper towels) are your responsibility.

Bicycles
Does Newport Place have bicycles that I can use?
Yes. Newport Place provides free use of bicycles to residents. At anytime, you may use any of the designated bicycles located in the bicycle rack in the backyard. We only require that you keep the bicycles locked (using the locks provided) when you are not riding them.

Parking
Do you have parking?
No. Newport Place does not offer parking. You must park on the street. Your car will be safe parked on the surrounding streets.
There are free parking spaces on 14th Street and metered parking on C Street. The parking meters are in effect Monday - Saturday from 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM (except on holidays). Please take notice of signs that state when street cleaning will occur.
If you are more comfortable having a permanent off-street parking space, there are a few pay parking lots and garages nearby. The monthly rates at local parking lots range from $80 to $150 per month.

Pets
Do you allow pets?
Sorry. No pets of any kind are allowed at Newport Place. No cats, dogs, reptiles, rodents, birds, fish, or any other animals or insects are allowed in Newport Place. However, you can have small potted plants.
The only exception will be for residents who require the service of an assistive animal.

Do I have a private mailbox?
Each apartment/studio has its own mail box and its own address. You and your roommates share the mail box and address. You and each of your roommates has a key to this private and secure mailbox.

Planning Assistance From Newport Place
We are eager to assist our current and confirmed residents with any issue at anytime. But as a small family-owned business, we are not able to answer the huge daily volume of assistance requests from prospective residents.
Please read the answers to the following common questions before contacting Newport Place.
Can you help me find somewhere else to live?
If you want to stay at Newport Place but will be arriving one day or more before a space is available, we often recommend a local youth hostel, or several affordable hotels/motels in the area. In this instance, we only provide alternative lodging assistance to people who have placed a Holding & Security/Damage Deposit in order to hold their reservation or to have their name put on the Paid Waiting List.
Can you recommend a language school in San Diego?
There are many fine language schools, colleges and universities in San Diego - several of which are located near Newport Place. Many of them refer their students to Newport Place. We are not school representatives. To find a list of quality local language schools go to our "Preferred Educators" web page.
Is Newport Place affiliated with a university or school?
No. Not directly. Newport Place is a privately owned and operated business that offers extended stay furnished housing.
Is it better to rent or buy a used car?
To rent or buy a used car depends on how long you will be in San Diego. To buy a reliable used car worthy of driving will cost at least $2,000 - $4,000 dollars. You could have trouble selling it when you want to leave town. Instead, you might want to consider renting a student rental car by the month. Rentals are about $450 per month with insurance.
Can you help me find a rental car agency?
Yes. For our residents, Newport Place has negotiated substantial car rental discounts with a nearby agency.
